One of the first species to begin calling in the spring, the peepers are out all night in full force now, with their loud, high-pitched, jingle-bell-sounding chorus of mating calls. Small and slender, roughly one inch in length, they breed in our 3 ponds and in our wetland areas. They have spent the winter burrowed under soil – a natural antifreeze in their blood keeps them thawed. Soon their chorus will be matched by the mating calls of American toads. After a long Ithaca winter, they are such a joy to take in!
